As America continues to struggle with its racial reckoning, we have seen communities from coast to coast come together to create necessary change, and tackle homelessness, lack of eco- nomic opportunities and education. What originated from a painful inflec- tion point in American history may end up being the spark that brings us to- gether and not apart.
Organizing Our Way Towards a Better America
In our current reality, you do not have to be a local elected official, com- munity development expert or neigh- borhood association leader to organize for change. Many local organizations, such as the Wilmington Metropolitan Urban League and Network Delaware,
are local resources that offer technical assistance and support for fledgling community groups that are looking to effect change.
With energy on the ground throughout Delaware and worldwide, there appears to be a sense that Amer- ica and the world will come through the coronavirus pandemic stronger than before. The outrage and protests on the streets have led to organizers and neighbors coming together with
governments to find solutions to im- prove neighborhoods. Ms. Shabazz believes that the new sense of commu- nity engagement will be long-lasting and create a “new normal” of govern- ment and community leaders working with citizens and taking ownership and control of the direction and re- sources in their neighborhoods.
