Park and Play
How much parking can be found downtown? Lots and lots.
W hether you’re visiting Newark to dine or to shop, there are plenty of options when it comes to parking.
Between the city and the University of Delaware, there are more than 3,000 spaces.
On the streets, the city has 457 metered spaces that are convenient to a variety of businesses. In addition, the city’s parking division is responsible for five municipal lots. Three are for hourly parking and two are for long-term. Many of these off-street parking areas are tucked behind buildings, so plan in advance.
To find the lot nearest to a restaurant, shop or service, visit newarkde.gov/parking for an interactive map. When you click on a particular lot, a pop-up window will detail
the type of parking, the lot capacity, the number of handicapped parking spaces, the rate and the payment options. In lot No. 1, for instance, you can use a major credit card, or you can pay with quarters or cash. Once you’re in town, look for the clearly marked signs so you know when to turn.
If you do park in one of the municipal lots, bring your stub with you to the restaurant or shop. Many establishments participate in the Downtown Newark Partnership’s validation program. A sticker in the vendor’s window indicates whether or not the business will validate parking.
Visitors to Newark can enjoy compli- mentary parking on the days listed on the city’s website. Parking is free, for instance,
on Memorial Day and Independence Day. Parking is also free during many of the city’s events, such as A New Night Downtown, the Downtown Newark Food & Brew Fest and Newark Community Day. (The website also has a link to the University of Dela- ware’s interactive parking map.)
Of course, parking isn’t limited to four- wheel vehicles. There are bicycle racks throughout Main Street. Parking here is free. (It is illegal to lock your bike to a tree, fire hydrant or handrail.) Visit the city’s website for a map with bicycle routes and repair stands.
Whether you bike to Newark or drive, you only need to park once. Most of the downtown shops and attractions are an easy walk from each other.
