For those who love fishing, Garrett County
is a year-round destination for anglers
from all over the country. Deep Creek Lake teems with walleye, yellow perch, bass,
trout and northern pike. The Youghiogheny, Casselman, Potomac and Savage Rivers are ideal for fly-fishing, and lessons are available.

Fall
Nearly 80,000 visitors descend on Garrett County each October for the five-day Autumn Glory Festival (visitdeepcreek.com). The 2021 festival is scheduled for Oct. 13-17.
The reason why autumn is so glorious in Garrett County is its landscape of dazzling colors. Fall foliage driving tours starting at the Garrett County Visitor’s Center reveal breathtaking scenery that is readily visible along the roadways. It’s no wonder that the Travel Channel lists the Deep Creek Lake region among the nation’s “Best Fall Foliage Road Trips.”
Copies of the fall foliage driving tours can be picked up at the Visitors Center located at 15 Visitors Center Drive, McHenry, MD 21541, downloaded with the Garrett Heritage app (available at the Google Play Store or iTunes App Store) or viewed online at garrettheritage. com/fall-foliage-driving-tours.
Another great way to take in the foliage: playing one of the many fine golf courses in the region. The courses currently follow state guidelines
for COVID-19, but please check each venue’s website for the most up-to-date precautions.
Players love the challenging fairways and dazzling scenery at Lodestone Golf Course (wispresort.com/lodestone), designed
by Hale Irwin. The course has the highest elevation of any golfing venue in Maryland at 2,973 feet above sea level.
