The Theatre on the Lake (totltheatre.org), a professional performance company, performs three plays every summer in the Barn at Ridgeview Valley. Productions include dramas, musicals, comedies and revues. This past year, the group provided videos of its company members discussing their favorite shows from the past and offered insight into how the shows came together. The goal is to get back to live theater in 2021.
The Garrett County Celtic Festival (gccelticfestival. com) celebrates the heritage, music, arts and culture of the Appalachian immigrants from Scotland, Ireland, Wales and Brittany. The celebration is scheduled to take place on Saturday June 5, 2021, at Friendsville Community Park.
Music at Penn Alps (musicatpennalps.org) is a summer series of primarily classical programs, with a focus on chamber ensembles and recitals performed by local artists. This past season was canceled and the group chose to contribute $5,000 from its limited funds to help its performers stay afloat until the programs can begin again — hopefully in 2021.
Simon Pearce Factory Outlet and Glassblowing
(simonpearce.com) is a popular spot in Mountain Lake Park. Shop in Simon Pearce’s retail store for hand-made glassware. Public tours of glassblowing facilities may be available depending upon current COVID-19 restrictions; please check simonpearce.com/our-stores/mountain- lake-park-outlet.
Summertime means outdoor concerts at Oakland’s Little Yough Summer Music Festival (oaklandmd.com/ly- schedule.html) and at the Stage Wisp Concert Series (wispresort.com/events). Check the websites for events in 2021.
Along the Historic National Road, you’ll find Spruce Forest Artisan Village (spruceforest.org), a collection of log homes that once served as lodging for travelers in the early 1800s. The homes are now studios where you can watch artisans work and purchase their wares. Spruce Forest’s annual Christmas in the Village, held December 3-4, 2021, is one of the area’s most popular events.

My Deep
Creek Experience
“I grew up in Garrett County and moved away for college and grad school. After a little over 10 years, I decided to move back to help with our family business and also work in my field of study as a nutrition and fitness coach. I chose to move back because of the unique opportunity I had to start hosting wellness retreats at our farm. My time now is spent divided between hands-on work at the farm, virtual and in-person training and coaching sessions, and creating educational content. I also lead yoga and other fitness classes, some at the farm during warmer months.
I love everything I can do outside here in Garrett County — skiing, biking, gardening, hiking, horseback riding. I never had this much in easy proximity when I lived in more urban areas. Summer is definitely my favorite season, but I make the most of the winters.”
