Elder Mill
Bridge
Elder Mill bridge in Watkinsville is just one of more than
two dozen wooden covered bridges in Georgia.
The bridge was built in 1897 and originally positioned between Watkinsville and Athens. It was constructed in the distinctive Town’s lattice truss form, which was patented by architect Ithiel Town in 1820 and 1835. The structure utilizes a large number of smaller planks for easy labor and wood pegs that connect interior beams.
Named for David Elder, a Revolutionary War soldier who settled in Oconee County, the bridge was moved in 1924 to its current site off of Highway 15. It spans Rose Creek, leading to what once was the Elder family mill. It is one of the few covered bridges in the state that carries traffic without the additional support of steel beams.
