Hospitals
The top-rated hospital in all of Pennsylvania, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center (pennmedicine.org),
created one of the first coronary-care units in the country. In fact, the facility traces its roots to the nation’s first hospital, Pennsylvania Hospital, opened in 1751. In 2017, 198 Penn physicians were included on Philadelphia Magazine’s list of Top Docs. Penn is also home to the Cardiovascular Research Institute, where researchers are constantly searching for new advances in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cardiac conditions.
In addition to providing exceptional medical care to the youngest patients, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) (chop.edu) offers support services for the rest
of the family, including social work, language services, creative arts therapy and chaplain services. The hospital’s Research Institute has a distinguished history of medical breakthroughs that spans more than a century. This
year the institute announced it had created an artificial, womb-like environment that could help transform care for extremely premature babies.
FUN FACT: CHOP is home to two major medical milestones – the first separation of Siamese twins and the first pediatric double-hand transplant.
Also notable in pediatric care is Nemours Children’s Health System (nemours.org), which has six locations in Pennsylvania, three in New Jersey and 13 in Delaware (including the system’s flagship hospital, the Nemours/ Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington).
Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals (hospitals. jefferson.edu) is nationally ranked by U.S. News & World Report in 11 adult specialties, including orthopedics; cancer; ear, nose and throat; gastroenterology and
GI surgery; nephrology; neurology and neurosurgery; ophthalmology; diabetes and endocrinology; geriatrics; and cardiology and heart surgery. The hospital provides services in five locations in the region, with 951 licensed beds and more than 1,500 staff members.
Main Line Health (mainlinehealth.org) serves por- tions of Philadelphia and its western suburbs. With more than 10,000 employees and 2,000 physicians on staff, the network is one of the region’s largest employers and healthcare providers. The health system includes four acute care hospitals—Lankenau Medical Center, Bryn Mawr, Paoli and Riddle hospitals—in addition to Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital; Mirmont Treatment Center for drug and alcohol recovery; and the Home Care Network.
Cooper University Health Care has been serving communities in South Jersey since 1887. Today Cooper operates a specialist-care hospital, a leading cancer center in partnership with MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, a children’s hospital, three urgent care
centers and more than 100 outpatient offices in South Jersey and Pennsylvania.
Christiana Care Health System (christianacare. org), headquartered in Wilmington, is a major teach- ing hospital as well as one of the country’s largest healthcare providers. In addition to acute care, the system offers a home healthcare service, rehabil- itation services, preventive medicine, a network of primary care physicians and an extensive range of outpatient services.
FUN FACT: With more than 11,100 employees, Christiana Care is the largest private employer in Delaware and among the top 10 in the Philadelphia region.
Specialty Care
The Philadelphia area also offers numerous options for those with specialized medical needs. At three
locations in the metro region, the Temple Lung Center (lung.templehealth.org) provides the latest in best-practice care to those with acute bronchitis, asthma, dyspnea, emphysema, hypoxemia and a range of other pulmonary conditions.
The Fox Chase Cancer Center (foxchase.org) has been designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute, meaning patients who seek care there have a better chance of survival. Patients at Fox Chase benefit from advanced treatments, experienced teams and a reputation for innovation.
Senior Care
For seniors looking for varying levels of care and support, options abound in Greater Philadelphia. The Philadelphia
Corporation for Aging (pcacares.org) is a great place to start exploring different services and service providers. The organization offers a Service Needs Checklist (pcacares.org/get-assistance/service-needs-checklist) to help seniors and their caregivers assess the best fit.
For seniors who are able to enjoy a reasonably independent lifestyle, assisted city living is available
at communities such as The Watermark at Logan Square East (logansquare.watermarkcommunities. com) and Atria Center City (atriaseniorliving.com). Both communities offer great city views and amenities, while discreetly and skillfully helping residents with their individual needs.
The most highly rated nursing home in the Philadelphia area is Beaumont at Bryn Mawr (beaumon- tretirement.com). The home is cooperatively owned and governed by its residents, giving them control over their own lifestyles. Amenities include nine dining rooms, fitness and aquatic centers, a library, a cinema, and an arts and crafts center.
In the city, continuing-care retirement community Cathedral Village (presbyterianseniorliving.org/cathe- dral-village) includes a fitness center where residents
can build strength, balance and cardiovascular health. Residents can also take advantage of discussion groups, a horticultural committee, a readers club and many other social activities.

Insurance Providers
Philadelphia is home to the headquarters of Independence Blue Cross (ibx.com), which serves more
than 2 million people in our region.
Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) provides
services to residents of New Jersey, while Delaware res- idents are covered by BCBS plans that include Highmark and Anthem.
Greater Philadelphia also is covered by many other major insurers, including Aetna, United Healthcare and Cigna.
