The Taco Project
[TARRYTOWN]
Casual and takeout-friendly, with scarcely 20 seats — but when the food is this authentic and supported by a farm-to- table ethos, no one’s going to miss the white cloth napkins. Highlights: a salad of smoked corn, Cotija cheese, and baby heirloom tomatoes; tacos (chorizo, short rib, pork belly, grilled Atlantic cod).
One Twenty One
[NORTH SALEM]
A little bit country-chic and a little bit modern, mixing the area’s rustic feel with elegance, this popular spot (make a reservation!) surprises with thoughtful, locally sourced food that tastes as fresh as it is. Highlights: charred cauliflower; shrimp and cheddar grits, wood-fired pizzas (caramelized onion and goat cheese), black bass.
La Chinita Poblana
[IRVINGTON]
Warm vibes and cold Margaritas help you settle into a fun evening at this cozy, authentic Mexican restaurant. The modest menu doesn’t overload you with options, but there’s still a meal for everyone (vegetarians and picky eaters included). Highlights: grilled cactus, stuffed chiles rellenos, ceviche, carne asada, duck in mole sauce.
Fantasy Cuisine
[HARTSDALE]
Manhattan’s Chinatown comes to Westchester with authentic Chinese food in a bustling atmosphere. Enjoy the perfect comfort food, homemade steamed soup
dumplings filled with pork, ginger and a savory broth. Highlights: dumplings, Thai- style curry puffs, kung pao (chicken, fish or shrimp), red- soup-style stir-fried fish, green tea ice cream.
Hopscotch
[CROTON-ON-HUDSON]
Fine cuisine and boldly creative dishes without a fuss. Expertly selected wines, fresh bread, and seasonal selections like buttery rich foie gras in the winter or brined cheese in the spring. Patio dining in warm weather. Highlights: octopus, Burrata, barley risotto, seared scallops, duck breast, goat cheesecake (menu changes frequently).
L’inizio
[ARDSLEY]
Almost anything on the menu is a delightful union of artful plating, skillful cookery and sustainable ingredients from local purveyors. There’s a mostly Italian wine list and on Tuesdays bottles under $100 are 50 percent off. Highlights: chicken liver crostini, baked clams, smoked ricotta with honey on grilled bread, cbomboloni (Italian donuts).
Little Mumbai Market
[PLEASANTVILLE]
Don’t be fooled by the low prices and funky setting — paint-can light fixtures and bicycle-tire wall hangings — this is a spot for seriously delicious fare. There’s Indian food but also, for the less adventurous, fresh-off-the- griddle crêpes. Highlights: the mushroom, leek, spinach, Brie crêpe; bhel puri; keema pav; Fig Me Up smoothie.
