METHODS
We retrospectively reviewed all pediatric patients who underwent an extremity
CT scan at our institution in 2012. All patients 19 or younger were included in this population. Data collected included sex, age, height, weight, body mass index (BMI), joint, upper extremity position, body position, scout start, scout end, CT scan procedure, CTDlvol (mGy), dose length product (CTDLP [mGy-cm]), and diagnoses. Descriptive and frequency statistics were used to show relationships between demographics, CT procedures, and radiation dose. SPSS v. 22 (IBM, Armonk, NY, USA) was used for statistical analysis.
RESULTS
A total of 163 patients met the inclusion criteria for this study. The patient population was 60.1 percent male (n = 98) and 39.8 percent female (n = 65). The age range was 0.5-19 years in females and 3.1-19 years in males (average ages: female, 11.94 ± 4.5 years; male, 12.80 ± 3.66 years). Height was 151.85 ± 24.06 cm for males and 139.92 ± 29.96 cm for females. Weight was 52.38 ± 23.13 kg for males and 47.33 ± 27.41 kg for females. BMI was 21.65 ± 5.69 for males and 21.98 ± 6.85 for females.
Lower extremity scans were more frequent (120/163, 74 percent). The three most common joints of 11 scanned were foot (37, 22.2 percent), hip (32, 19.2 percent), and ankle (25, 15.0 percent).
Upper extermity positioning was consistent for the hand and wrist as “away from the body” and shoulder at the “side
