Final Thoughts
One question that I have been asked many times over the last two years is “How is the
presidency?” Usually my answer will include one of the following words: “challenging,” “interesting,” or “educational.” As my presidency comes to an end, I would add “satisfying,” “empowering,” and “engaging.” The
last two words also could describe what has developed into “my” message — providing physicians with the tools and knowledge to remain engaged and be empowered in this rapidly changing health care delivery environment. Through the President’s Page, I have attempted to touch on topics which I feel are timely and pertinent to physicians
in Delaware. I believe that Delaware is
a microcosm of the national trends that are occurring in the health care delivery system, and I hope during my presidency that I have been able to inform and assist physicians so that they can successfully navigate through the changes.
that I did not have an “agenda” for MSD leadership and, therefore, would not be useful in guiding physicians,
which I believe is what leadership should do. However, I quickly learned that an agenda develops de novo just
by “doing.” I have been fascinated by
the range of issues that involve the Medical Society, issues which impact a physician’s practice on a daily basis. One example is the breadth of our advocacy in Dover. Over the past two years,
the Medical Society has successfully promoted physicians’ interests regarding such diverse issues as telemedicine, medical marijuana, expansion of scope of practice by other providers, and any infringement into clinical practice, such as mandating Lyme disease treatment. For these efforts, the Medical Society has been recognized as one of the top four health care advocacy groups during the 2015 legislative session.
Another area of focus has been the maturation of the Prescription Drug Action Committee (PDAC) and its work to decrease the prescription drug abuse epidemic throughout Delaware. From the inception and implementation of
the Prescription Monitoring Program to the development of Drug Takeback Days and the availability of Naxolone, the Medical Society has had an active
