Thank You for All You Do
Thank you for the great honor
you have bestowed upon me, electing me the 172nd President of the Medical Society of Delaware. We are now 226 years old, an auspicious organization whose mission it is to “guide, serve and support Delaware physicians; promoting the practice
and profession of medicine to enhance the health of our communities” and in particular the patients of Delaware that we serve every day.
I want to personally thank you for being
in these times with the amount and rapidity of change that confronts us, our practices, staff, and patients on a daily basis. I’d like to tell you a story that happened to me recently. My husband and I were purchasing new couches for our family room. The salesman helped us select them and while we were setting up the payment, I gave him my ID and application process he asked me what
I did for a living. I told him I am a
physician, an ophthalmologist. He asked me how long I had been in practice and I told him 30 years. He was typing all looked at me, and said “thank you for all you have done, you must have helped a lot of people in all those years.” I had never met this gentleman before, but it made me pause and think for a moment. I had one of those ah-ha moments where you stop and think “Wow.” His simple acknowledgement, that as physicians we make a difference for our many patients, was heartwarming. With us rests the knowledge and skills to help many individuals. We do this on a daily basis over the course of all the years that we practice; we touch a lot of lives. We don’t frequently hear those small expressions of gratitude, so thank you.
In a 2011 Gallup poll rating the honesty and ethical standards of various professions, physicians were ranked third with a 70 percent very high/ high rating and only a 6 percent very low/ low rating. This had slowly
