Mr. Tilton published a genealogy, History of the Tilton Family in America, in1937 and discovered Dr. Tilton during research for that project. Documents within the Public the biography began in the mid to late 1930s, and that the manuscript was completed in 1948. It was donated to the Archives by Francis Tilton’s mother, who was 93 at the time of her son’s death and was executor of his will.
The mere size of the manuscript did not allow me to thoroughly review it before publication of the Delaware Medical Journal articles on the founders. However, after the series for the Journal was complete, I returned to the manuscript and began transcribing it, completing the task in April 2015.
The manuscript was a work in progress, not at all highly polished for publication. It contained numerous marginal pencil notations indicating areas for further investigation. of the source and from time to time text within quote marks had no source indication. Some broad references were not new research, his personal knowledge, or just plain guess work. Most quotes attributed to Dr. Tilton have no reference.
I found the manuscript to be a wonderful book. Not only
is it a detailed biography of Dr. Tilton, but it also provides detailed insight into the early development of the Army Medical Department. For research purposes, it would be references are included.
