DISCUSSION
Over the years of this study, the DTS has served increasing numbers of children with mild TBI, while registrations of children with moderate or severe TBI have remained constant. There has been a corresponding increase in trauma system encounters that marked among younger children. The same trends were evident
among interhospital transfers within the system. Mild TBI and non-substantive admissions were even more prevalent for children injured out of state than in Delaware. The great majority of helicopter transports were for children with mild TBI, and almost one third of helicopter transports were followed by non-substantive primary mission of trauma systems, which is to deliver the most intense services to the most severely injured patients as quickly
as possible. Indeed we note that the mortality rate for severe TBI
