Three thousand years ago, the Egyptians were decorating furniture with inlaid pieces of shell and bone. The look was popularized in Europe during the Ottoman Empire as “intarsia,” and we are seeing a lot of it these days. They are “person- ality pieces,” says designer Alexa Hampton. “They pack a lot of punch.” The eclecticism of bone inlay is especially welcome after several years of gray and white rooms. Wisteria has been loving it for a while. It’s all over ABC Carpet and Home — and at One Kings Lane, it’s an official “Trend Alert.” (It’s worth noting that most sellers of bone inlay furniture mention somewhere that the bone is from camels who have died of natural causes —
so it’s kind of recycling too.)

We can’t all afford original art. But a few rolls of wallpaper are within most budgets. With so many easy removal options, this is the year of wallpaper. Carefully chosen and placed, a single wall of designer wallpaper will create visual interest and express your own quirky (romantic, subtle, insane) vision. Best of all, when the love affair is over, down it comes.
