in: Pops of Color and Pattern
There’s been a lot of monochrome around these past few years, so the return of color and pattern will be
a welcome relief. Decorating gurus like Amy Astley, editor-in-chief of Architectural Digest, are not backing off from neutral backgrounds, but for 2017 they are suggesting brights and prints in unexpected places. Green is the favorite child, being Pantone color of the year and all, but yellow, pink, orange? All good.
A bright patterned rug, maybe. Or how about a secondhand painting with a bright green blob?
out: Words and Signs
Whether it’s a feel-good message like
“Enjoy The Little Things” or “Today I
Choose Joy” — or the opposite, a self-
aware put down like “Classy, Sassy, and
a Bit Smart Assy” — the time has come
to get rid of those sayings on wooden
boards that seemed so on-target when
you bought them. The messages may still
ring true for you, but not everyone who walks through the
front door will get it. And in addition to creating clutter, they may reveal more about yourself than you want to share — now that you’re a grownup.
So, how much does all of this matter? Should we bear these ideas in mind as we shop around, or take it all with a grain of salt? Obviously, no one wants to be a slavish trend follower. On the other hand, do we
really want to be the last house on the block with avocado ap- pliances? Even if, “Yes dear, they work perfectly well.”
