mature plantings. Grand rooms, luxuri- ously appointed, in near-perfect condi- tion, although the kitchen is not modern. The laundry room has a fireplace(!). A cozy sitting room offers a place to go and pat yourself on the back in private.
Where: Set high above Lake Roland, with access via Woodbrook Lane, Tyr- connell is just north of the Baltimore city line — close to city conveniences but with an exceptionally private set- ting.
Why: Because you love the house. There’s no real practical reason. Houses like this rarely come on the market, and it’s a chance to make it yours.
Why Not: Garden maintenance here will take more than your spade and rose clippers.
Would Suit: History-loving connois- seur, preferably with Irish blood.
NB: The gardens, perhaps even more than the house, are truly remarkable. A steep, 200-foot stone staircase at the end of a long allee will elicit gasps.
Update: Listed
in March 2016 for $1,150,000, it was sold for Phelps by his Towson attorney David Pessin in August 2016 for $960,000, shortly before Phelps ended his record-breaking Olympic swimming career with 23 gold medals.
LMichael Phelps’ Bachelor Pad
CANTON LOFT:
oft-style, green renovation of two commercial buildings, circa 1880 and 1913, into one 5,600-square-foot open space with three bedrooms, two-and-a-half baths.
Concrete and original longleaf pine floors, open fireplace with steel hood, hot tub, skylights, roof deck. Cable ready, security system, five-car garage: $1,150,000
What: Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps spent the last of his bachelor years here. Now 31, he lives in Arizona with his new wife and baby, an “already above-average size boy.” Meanwhile, his house is on the market, at an above- average, but not staggering price for Canton. There’s a definite masculine quality to the place — maybe the enormous scale (20- foot ceilings downstairs), maybe the dark-hued paint job, may- be the big, rooftop hot tub. Whatever, it is a luxurious urban industrial space, and there are not many like it in Canton (yet).
Where: Just off O’Donnell Square. Water views from rooftop deck.
Why: Hot tub and wet bar on rooftop deck offer epic party potential.
Why Not: Canton bar scene can become too fun — it happened to Michael ...
Would Suit: Exelon exec (one bought Michael’s former house in Fells Point.)
