ATHLETICS FALL & WINTER SNAPSHOT
Salesianum student athletes and teams continue to excel both locally and nationally. Below are a few highlights from the fall and winter seasons. Look for a comprehensive 2018-19 year-in-review athletics wrap-up in the next edition of Distinguished Gentleman.
FALL 2018
CROSS COUNTRY: State Champions
Sean Banko ’19 and Michael Keehan ’19 are now the most decorated runners in Salesianum history. Both Banko and Keehan qualified for the Cross Country Nationals in Portland, Oregon this fall.
FOOTBALL: DIAA D1 Tournament Finalist
Andrew Watkins ’20 was named Fox Sports-1290 AM Football Player of the Year.
William DiNardo, varsity head coach, was named Fox Sports-1290 AM Football Coach of the Year.
SOCCER: State Champions, Ranked 8th Nationally by USA Today Sports Tom McGrail ’19, Salesianum soccer varsity center back, was named
the Delaware High School Soccer Coaches Association Player of the Year and also heads the XI All-State high school boys soccer team.
WINTER 2019
SWIMMING: State Champions
Coach Chip Hannig and the team earn their 13th championship in 14 seasons.
Alek Elder ’22: 100 backstroke state champion (52.09).
Brian Hochman ’20: 100 freestyle state champion (47.31) and 200 freestyle state champion (1.41.70).
Tommy Janton ’22, Alek Elder ’22, Justin Fitzpatrick ’20 and Cameron Marion ’20: 200 medley relay state champions (1:37.29).
Cameron Marion ’20, Joey Dickson ’20, Justin Fitzpatrick ’20 and Brian Hochman ’20: 200 free relay state champions (1:28.40).
Tommy Janton ’22, Joey Dickson ’20, Alek Elder ’22 and Brian Hochman ’20: 400 free relay state champions (3:17.88).
WINTER TRACK:
Michael Keehan ’19: 1600m state champion.
WRESTLING:
Zach Spence ’19: Won his third individual wrestling state champion title at 113 lbs.
Harry Latch ’19: Individual wrestling state champion at 138 lbs and was voted the DIAA state meet’s “Outstanding Wrestler.”
Danny Stradley ’21: Individual wrestling state champion at 195 lbs.
Michael Keehan and Sean Banko are the fastest duo from any school in state history. Here are stats:

• Fastest 5K: 15:15.90
Sean Banko
• 1st team all-state
• Three-time all-county
• 1st team All-Southeast Region • Nike national’s qualifier
• Fastest 5K: 15:18.35
Michael and Sean finished 1 and 2 at the Salesianum Invitational.
Michael and Sean ran the two fastest 5Ks by teammates at Bellevue State Park at the Joe O’Neill Invitational, running 15:17 (Keehan) and 15:18 (Banko) for the third- and fourth-fastest times ever at Bellevue State Park.
Michael Keehan holds school records for courses at Bellevue and Van Cortlandt Park. At both courses, Michael is tied for third-fastest in state history.
At the state championships, Michael Keehan won and Sean Banko placed third.
