Salesianum School Theater Wows with Zimmerman’s METAMORPHOSES and Sets TITts Sights on Pete Townshend’s
HE WHO’S TOMMY
his past fall, Salesianum School Theater presented
Metamorphoses by Mary Zimmerman, based on tales from
Ovid. This series of short scenes and stories all focus on
the transformations of life and the nature of love. And, as a
part of the symbolism and to enhance the visualization of this transformation, Zimmerman wrote the play to be placed in and around a pool of water.
Under the guidance of Salesianum’s Director of the Arts, Mr. Aaron Bogad, and Technical Director,
Mr. David Lock, students completely transformed the Spragg Auditorium by building a set that extended the stage through decking surrounding a large pool. The result: The performance was literally brought into the audience, yielding a visually stunning and unforgettable backdrop.
This spring, the theater will perform the hit Broadway rock musical The Who’s Tommy. The show features several of
The Who’s top 40 hits such as “Pinball Wizard,” “See Me, Feel Me” and “I’m Free.” The set design and choreography are remarkable and expected to delight audiences by incorporating 70 screens and surfaces, more than a half mile of cable, 26 cast members, 24 crew members, four musicians and 10 staff representing Salesianum, Padua and Ursuline Academies. And, in the spirit of inclusiveness, a professional American Sign Language interpreter who is used by many of the largest theater houses in the region will sign at one of the performances. Tommy, in nearly its 30th year of being performed, is a timeless story of healing, hope and transformation.
