Tuba City, AZ BRIDGE
Tuba City is the largest community within the Navajo Nation. Prior to arriving in
Tuba City, students studied the painful history of the Navajo, including the infamous Long Walk, which began in 1864 and was the result of years of conflicts with the United States Army. The Walk involved the deportation of large bands
of Navajo people from their native lands. They were then forced to walk a grueling 400-mile journey. Between the conflicts and the Long Walk, thousands of Navajo lost their lives.
While on the reservation, students stayed at St. Jude’s Parish and spent time in service and becoming immersed in Navajo culture. Visiting the sacred Monument Valley grounds, dancing with Filipino and Navajo parishioners during Santo Niño de Cebú Feast Day celebration (pictured) and enjoying traditional, local cuisine were just a few of the unique opportunities the Tuba City service-learning trip presented.
