Bring the American Dream to Life
The DAR advocates for first-time homebuyers from the front lines to the General Assembly
As buying a home becomes more complex— with more regulations, costs and competition— REALTORS® still derive a unique
pleasure from helping a first-time buyer find a home of their own.
“There’s no greater joy than working with first-time homebuyers,” says Beau
Zebley, president of the Delaware Association of REALTORS® (DAR). “Seeing the look in their eyes when they’ve found their home, it’s something special.”
First-time buyers tend to start with excitement about the prospect of owning a home combined with unease about an unfamiliar process, so they depend on REALTORS® to give them direction.
“I think the most critical component is letting them know early on they can trust you,” Zebley says. “It’s paramount.”
The Delaware Association of REALTORS® also advocates for first-time buyers in the General Assembly. Regulations, fees and taxes can be a burden for any buyer, but they can hit first-timers particularly hard.
Among the DAR’s recent wins was a provision to exempt first-time buyers from an increase in the transfer tax for the first $400,000 of a home’s price. The change saves buyers up to $2,000.
