Because Georgia’s robust forest industry has successfully increased in efficiency over the years, the state grows more trees
than it harvests annually.
Even wood furniture sequesters CO2. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), forests in the U.S. offset 13 percent of the country’s total emissions. As a result, the EPA also notes that responsibly managed forests can contribute to the country’s emissions reduction strategies.
In addition to CO2, trees help keep our air clean by absorbing pollutants. Leaves help by removing sulfur dioxide, ozone, nitrogen oxides and particulates from the air. A recent study of U.S. forests found that our trees and forests removed 17.4 million metric tons of air pollution in one year, saving as many as 850 lives and 670,000 incidences of acute respiratory symptoms, with a total of $6.8 billion in human health effects.2
