FARM FRESH
Farms, Orchards & Markets
Who imagined that a county bordering New York City could be a verdant landscape of farmland, orchards and pastures? We even have our own Farm Trail, tracing a path from Sleepy Hollow to North Salem; you can learn more on the next page. It’s all here in Westchester — fresh produce straight from farm to fork, hay rides, petting zoos, pick- your-own apples, and roadside stands and Farmer’s Markets!

Fluffy Fun
These are not your typical farm animals! Meet a herd of alpacas as well as friendly, pony-sized Icelandic horses at Yorktown’s Faraway Farm. And pick up some cozy garments or yarn made from the soft alpaca fleece
at the farm store. Tours by appointment.
HERE’S A SAMPLING:
Go Green
Gain a new perspective on sustainable living with a visit to Hilltop Hanover Farm and Environmental Center in Yorktown Heights. You’ll learn about organic composting, how to start
a backyard — or window sill! — garden, and why it’s smart to harvest rainwater. Meet the farmers, hike a woodland trail and say hello to the chickens and goats.
Do It Yourself
Cut out the supermarket middleman by “picking your own” at farms around the County. In recent years, Harvest Moon Orchard & Farm in North Salem has planted 2,000 new apple, peach and nectarine trees for your picking pleasure. At Stuart’s Fruit Farm
in Somers, choose among 20 different apple varieties during the September to November season. And
to find your own “Great Pumpkin,” head to Wilkens Fruit and Fir Farm in Yorktown Heights or
North Salem’s Outhouse Orchards.
History Lesson
Recall our agricultural heritage at Muscoot Farm in Somers, an interpretive site where you can stroll through a dairy barn,
milk house, ice house and blacksmith shop. You’ll see livestock and poultry breeds, some rare, typical of an early 20th-century gentleman’s farm. Then pick up a map and explore hiking trails that traverse Muscoot’s 777 acres of fields, woodlands and wetlands. There’s a seasonal farmer’s market, weekend hay rides, classes on topics like herbal medicine and a chance for the kids to meet baby animals.
