EKMAN RECYCLING’S
GLOBAL REACH
Recovered Materials Leave Baltimore for
Asia, Europe and South America
Ekman’s biggest overseas desti-
nations are India and China, but the
company also ships containers full of
recycled materials to South America,
Europe and other areas of Asia.
“We have a wide variety of
destinations we service,” Buttari said.
“Baltimore is a very, very important port
for us. We have a number of suppliers
that are serviced by Baltimore the best.
The cargo we route via Baltimore really
needs to go through Baltimore and would
not work if we tried to ship it from any
other U.S. port.”
Because the profit margins for
recycled materials are small, it’s critical
to keep cargo moving — and deliver it as
quickly as possible.
Every year, Ekman ships almost
2,500 40-foot containers from the Port

f you — being a good citizen of
the world — deposit this magazine
into the recycling bin after you’ve
finished with it, you are part of a
global supply chain of recycled
materials in which Ekman Recycling and
the Port of Baltimore play a vital role.
As a member of the Ekman Group,
Ekman Recycling buys waste materials,
such as scrap metal and recycled paper
and plastic, by the ton and then ships
it to far-flung markets across the globe,
where it serves as raw material for
manufacturing.
“A lot of countries don’t have natural
resources, and they rely on recycled
materials,” explained Paul Buttari, Vice
President of Transportation & Logistics
for Ekman. “For example, in China, a
lot of material we send is recycled into
packaging material.”
