Community Cleanup
on Historic Land
at Upper Bear Creek
A
shoreline cleanup along
the Upper Bear Creek area
of Baltimore County took
place on April 20, according to the
Baltimore Port Alliance (BPA).
Partnering with the Clean Bread
and Cheese Creek organization,
the Gray Manor and Northshire
Community Association, and
the Eastfield Stanbrook Civic
Association, volunteers are helping
to improve an area of undeveloped
land by removing trash and debris.
The land is tied to the Battle of North
Point during the War of 1812. In 1814,
British and American troops fought
an important battle in the area as
the British moved toward Baltimore.
The communities’ goal is to
develop a Bear Creek land and water
spur trail, which has been proposed
as part of the Star-Spangled Banner
National Historic Trail. This event
also supports the goals of Project
Clean Stream, an Alliance for the
Chesapeake Bay activity held each
April.
Working in partnership with
community groups to organize and
participate in cleanup activities
— something the BPA has done in
several neighborhoods — reflects
the core mission of the BPA’s
environmental committee: to build
constructive relationships with the
communities that surround the
Port of Baltimore and participate
with the broader community
in environmentally beneficial
initiatives.
