business,” said Baltimore Mayor Stephanie
Rawlings-Blake.
Mayor Rawlings-Blake told the crowd
of more than 100 attendees at the Seagirt
celebration, “These giant cranes are the
physical representation of the future of
the Port of Baltimore.” She also touted
two other important Port-related initiatives
that are in the works — improving Broening
Highway, which provides truck access to
the Seagirt terminal, and completing a new
CSX intermodal facility that can handle
double-stack rail cars. “The Port’s economic
future will be protected for generations by
the investments we’re making today,” she
said.

Timeline
The MPA agrees in November
2009 to lease the 200-acre Seagirt
Marine Terminal to Ports America
Chesapeake for 50 years.
“We welcome an internationally
respected partner in the
maritime field for this unique,
long-term joint venture.”
~ Maryland Governor
Martin O’Malley
A ground-breaking ceremony
occurs in March 2010.
“As ships look ahead at
scheduling [port calls] when
work is completed on the canal,
Seagirt will already be on their
radar. We will not be promising
to get the berth built by 2014
– it will already be built and
functioning.”
